  • Relief and Liberation spread along Netherlands beginning of May 1945

  • Canadian troops entered Netherlands from the east travelling to the north, liberating towns and villages in between

  • Western provinces of the Netherlands had to wait to be liberated until the surrender of Germans was negotiated on the morning of May 5, 1945

  • Couple months after the liberation the Dutch government conducted the Bakker-Schut Plan. This meant the Dutch government wanted to annex a portion of German land, doubling the size of the Netherlands, but later this plan was dropped although two small villages were given to the Netherlands but later these small villages were given back after reparations from Germany

  • Many Germans occupying the Netherlands were deported

  • German soldiers were penalized by cleaning out minefields or sentenced by courts of treason, others were humiliated in public.

  • After liberation in the Netherlands, Dutch citizens believed in Nationalism. Citizens were taking laws into their own

  • Dutch citizens affected by the war was given money to compensate and still today people are compensated
